Is BOTOX Safe?

Recent allegations by Public Citizen:

Recent media coverage in the Wall Street Journal regarding botulinum toxins, in which Public Citizen alleged fatalities resulted from its use, have thus far been unsubstantiated. While there are multiple botulinum toxin products on the market, BOTOX® which is manufactured by Allergan, is the industry leader. BOTOX® is composed of highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from a bacterium. Every botulinum toxin is unique and has its own safety and efficacy profile. According to Dr. Sef Kurstjens, Allergan’s Chief Medical Officer, “In its entire history, there has never been a single reported death where a causal link to BOTOX® Cosmetic was established.”

Current Statistics for BOTOX®:

3,181,592: treatments administered in United States in 2006.

3,000 publications about the efficacy of botulinum toxin type A in scientific and medical journals.

97% satisfaction of recent survey of 1,000 patients treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic1

75 countries around the world have approved the use of BOTOX®.

6 years since FDA approved use of BOTOX® Cosmetic for treatment of moderate to severe glabellar (vertical) lines between brows in adults 18 to 65 2

1: Rank of BOTOX® Cosmetic on list of Top 5 Surgical & Nonsurgical Physician Administered Cosmetic Procedures3, according to American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

How Does BOTOX® Work?

The product is injected directly into the affected area and works by blocking the release of acetylcholine from the nerve ending at the neuromuscular junction. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that signals the muscles to contract. The action is temporary, lasting 2 to 4 months.

Side Effects:

Usually temporary and self-limited, but can include localized pain, infection, tenderness, redness and bruising. Other complications include eyelid drooping and nausea.

Is BOTOX® for everyone?

Patients with peripheral motor neuropathic diseases (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or motor neuropathy) or neuromuscular junctional disorders (such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome) should only receive BOTOX® with caution.
