Benefit in radiation after breast cancer surgery

Radiation treatment after surgery for breast cancer significantly lowers the risk that the disease will recur in the breast or spread lethally to other parts of the body over the next 10 to 15 years, researchers say.

The new findings mean that radiation prevents recurrences for a longer time and saves more lives than was generally recognized, said Sarah C. Darby, a professor of medical statistics at the University of Oxford and an author of the report.

For more information on these findings and the article from The New York Times, click here.

struction surgery.

Maine's breast reconstruction rate after mastectomy is only 25 percent. That's half, even a third of many other states, where 50 to 75 percent get reconstruction.

Therese K. White, MD, receives Medical Care and Research Award

On October 5th, Cindy Williams, WCSH 6 news anchor, presented Dr. White with the Medical Care and Research Award at the 10th Anniversary Cure Breast Cancer for ME luncheon. The luncheon, an annual event of the Maine Cancer Foundation, was held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland, Maine. During the event, a three-minute video on breast cancer, Dr. White and her practice at Plastic & Hand Surgical Associates was featured.

One of the statistics communicated during the luncheon is that in Maine, only 25% of women who have breast cancer with mastectomies also have breast reconstruction surgery. That statistic is very low when compared to the national average of 50% to 75% having reconstruction.

One goal of the Maine Cancer Foundation is to inform women in Maine that reconstruction is an option in conjunction with mastectomy.

Plastic & Hand Surgical Associates had a table of 12 at this inspiring event.
